Living in Nha Trang Long Term: Visa, Rent, Costs

A visa-free stay is 45 days for the listed passports. An e-visa lasts up to 90 days. Anything longer needs a sponsor in Vietnam, who files the extension at US$10, or a visa that qualifies for a residence card at US$145 to US$165. Rent, SIM and insurance come after that.

The 45-day exemption lists

Resolution 44/NQ-CP gives citizens of its listed countries 45 days from entry, for any passport type and any purpose, if all entry conditions are met. It runs from 15 March 2025 through 14 March 2028.

Resolution 229/NQ-CP gives a separate list 45 days for tourism only, from 15 August 2025 through 14 August 2028. For a country Vietnam exempts on its own, the stamp gives 45 days, and the person may be considered for a visa or an extension. The full lists are in Vietnam visa exemption for Nha Trang.

The e-visa

A Vietnam e-visa is valid for a maximum of 90 days, for single or multiple entries. The official fee is US$25 for single entry and US$50 for multiple entry, and it is non-refundable if the visa is refused. E-visas are issued only to foreigners who are still outside Vietnam.

An e-visa holder in Vietnam may be eligible to apply for a new visa if invited or guaranteed by an authority, organisation or individual in Vietnam. See Vietnam e-visa for Nha Trang and Cam Ranh Airport arrival.

Extending your stay in Nha Trang

A foreigner who wants to extend must have the inviting or sponsoring organisation or individual file the request. Processing takes no more than 5 working days from a complete dossier. The fee is US$10 per extension.

In Nha Trang the Immigration Management Division of Khanh Hoa Provincial Police receives applications in person at 47 Ly Tu Trong. The national procedure page gives reception hours from Monday to Saturday morning, except Tet and public holidays.

Work, business and remote work

A foreigner who enters, exits or resides in Vietnam must carry out activities that match the purpose of entry. The DL visa symbol is issued to a person entering for tourism.

Business visa and work permit

DN1 is for a foreigner coming to work with an enterprise or other organisation that has legal-entity status. DN2 is for offering services, setting up a commercial presence or other activities under an international treaty. DN1 and DN2 last up to 1 year. See business visa in Nha Trang.

A foreign worker must hold a work permit, except in the cases in Labor Code Article 154. A manager, executive, expert or technical worker in Vietnam for under 90 days in a calendar year is exempt. A foreigner married to a Vietnamese citizen and living in Vietnam is also exempt. See work permit in Nha Trang.

Working without a permit or exemption certificate is fined VND 15,000,000 to 25,000,000. A foreigner who practises a profession or other activity without permission is fined VND 15,000,000 to 20,000,000.

Remote work on a stay

No fine article states whether remote work for an employer abroad counts as working in Vietnam. Read remote work on a tourist visa before you plan around it. Tax residency turns on presence: a person present for 183 days or more in a year is a resident individual. See the tax residency test.

The temporary residence card

A temporary residence card is issued to a foreigner permitted to reside in Vietnam for a fixed period, and it is valid in place of a visa. Processing takes 5 working days from a complete dossier.

Article 36 lists the visa symbols that qualify, including LV1, LV2, LS, DT1, DT2, DT3, NN1, NN2, DH, PV1, LD1, LD2, TT, UD1 and UD2. DN1 and DN2 are not on the list.

Card validity Government fee
Up to 2 years US$145
Over 2 to 5 years US$155
Over 5 to 10 years US$165

The card validity is set at least 30 days shorter than the remaining validity of your passport. See temporary residence card in Nha Trang and Vietnam immigration fees. The immigration office guide is Nha Trang immigration office.

Registering where you live

A foreigner temporarily residing in Vietnam declares that residence through the person who runs the accommodation, to the ward police where it is located. The accommodation asks for your passport and residence papers before it agrees to let you stay.

An electronic declaration is filed the moment you arrive. A paper declaration on form NA17 goes to the local police within 12 hours, or 24 hours in remote areas. Hand over your passport when you check in. See temporary residence registration in Nha Trang.
