How to buy a train ticket as a foreigner
Tickets are sold on the Vietnam Railways site dsvn.vn and on vetau.com.vn. The railway policy adds vetauonline.vn and giare.vetau.vn. The dsvn.vn menu offers an English option. The steps themselves were not checked in English.

- Pick a train: the dsvn.vn menu has ticket search, timetable and fares, and return or exchange.
- Book on a website, at a station or agent, or in an app.
- Pay by e-wallet or bank app if you book on a phone: the policy names MoMo, VNPay, ShopeePay, ZaloPay and ViettelPay.
- Enter your name and document details exactly as in your passport.
- At a counter or agency, give your full name and a valid ID number.
- Carry your passport and the ticket: you show both to enter the station and board.
What counts as ID for a foreigner
Viet Nam News reports that from 1 January 2024 passengers show valid personal documents when buying tickets and boarding. For foreigners these are a passport or a consular letter.
Buying close to departure
A ticket bought under 48 hours before departure costs 7% more for journeys under 1,000 km and 5% more over 1,000 km.
Changing, returning and discounts
Changing a ticket
An individual ticket cannot be changed under 24 hours before departure. A change more than 24 hours before departure costs VND 20,000 per ticket. To change in person, bring the original ID of the traveller or the buyer to the station.
Returning a ticket
For an individual ticket the policy sets no refund under 4 hours before departure. It sets 20% of the price from 4 to under 24 hours, and 10% above 24 hours, with a minimum of VND 10,000.
Tickets bought and paid online with an email address can be returned online on dsvn.vn or at the station. Tickets bought another way are returned at the station with the original ID, and the details on the boarding card must match.

Refunds go back to the account used to pay. An e-wallet takes about 1 day, and a bank account 3 to 10 working days. An international card takes up to 45 days.
Child fares and discounts
A child under 6 who shares an adult’s seat travels free, one child per adult ticket. A discount of 25% applies to Vietnamese children aged 6 to under 10. A 15% discount applies to Vietnamese citizens aged 60 or over. A 10% discount applies to students with Vietnamese nationality.
Each of these discounts names Vietnamese nationality or citizenship, except the free child under 6. Individual return tickets get 10% off the return leg when the conditions are met. On the Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City route, groups of 20 to 50 passengers get a group discount from 3%.
Luggage on the train
Vietnam Railways’ own rules page says free carry-on luggage per ticketed passenger must not exceed 20 kg. It also limits the size to 0.8 m long, 0.5 m wide and 0.16 cubic metres. The page was posted on 04/01/2019, so ask at the station if you carry something near these limits.

If excess luggage is found on the journey or at the arrival station, the passenger buys an extra ticket at 1.3 times the basic luggage rate. The railway may refuse live animals, dangerous goods and bulky items that block the aisle or damage carriage equipment.
About the station: history and layout
Xanh SM says the station opened on 02/09/1936 and was ranked a national historic-cultural relic in 2011. It says the station keeps its French-period architecture and was once called the second most beautiful station in Indochina after Da Lat.

A station built on a bulb-shaped loop
Xanh SM calls Nha Trang the only station in Vietnam built on a light-bulb loop, where trains enter and leave by the same route.
23 October 1945
The same page says the first shots of the resistance against the French in Khanh Hoa were fired here on 23/10/1945.
What happens to the station after 2030
The Khanh Hoa People’s Committee expects to convert the station’s function after 2030. At least 60% of the area is planned as park, walkway and a station museum. This is a plan, so treat the trains as running as normal.
