Extend your visa in Nha Trang: sponsor, fee and steps

You cannot file a stay extension yourself: your inviting or sponsoring organisation or individual files it. The fee is US$10. Processing takes no more than 5 working days from a complete dossier. In Nha Trang, the Khanh Hoa police immigration division handles it.

Who can sponsor you

An organisation or an individual can sponsor you. A sponsoring organisation must already have a dossier at the Immigration Management Division of the provincial police.

A Vietnamese citizen who sponsors you must be your grandparent, parent, spouse, child or sibling, and must show proof of the relationship.

Steps to extend

  1. Your sponsor starts the request with the immigration authority.
  2. Prepare the declaration form NA5; ask your sponsor which version the office accepts. If you file online, your passport must be sent to the receiving agency through the public postal service.
  3. File in person at the provincial police immigration management agency in office hours on working days. The national page lists reception from Monday to Saturday morning, except Tet and public holidays.
  4. Or file through the National Public Service Portal or the Ministry of Public Security Public Service Portal.
  5. Pay the fee: US$10 per extension.
  6. Wait up to 5 working days from a complete dossier.
  7. Collect the result Monday to Friday, except Tet and public holidays. Bring the appointment slip for collecting the result.

The extension file includes the foreigner’s passport or other international travel document, one original. The official eligibility conditions are a valid passport, a visa (except in cases of visa exemption), and a temporary residence certification issued by the competent Vietnamese authority.

Documents checklist

  • Passport or other international travel document, one original.
  • Declaration form NA5.
  • A first-time organisation sponsor sends a one-time notice under Article 16: a certified licence copy and a document showing its seal and signatory.
  • Proof of relationship, if a Vietnamese relative sponsors you.
  • The appointment slip, when you collect the result in person.

The official procedure is titled “Gia han tam tru cho nguoi nuoc ngoai tai Viet Nam (thuc hien tai cap tinh)”, code 1.001146. Search that code on the Ministry portal. The stated outcome is an extended temporary residence certificate, and no maximum extension length is specified.

Fee

Item Amount
Temporary-stay extension, per extension US$10
Separate “lệ phí” (charge) on the national page None

Fees for foreigners are collected in Vietnamese dong or US dollars. Amounts set in USD may be paid in USD, or in dong converted at the rate set under Decree 362/2025/NĐ-CP. If the applicant is not eligible or refuses to accept the result, the fee already paid is not refunded.

The clock: five working days once your file is complete

The legal deadline is no more than 5 working days from the date a complete dossier is received. That applies whether the dossier is filed in person, online or by post. An incomplete file does not start the clock.

On the national page, applications are received Monday to Saturday morning and results are returned Monday to Friday. Neither runs on Tet or public holidays. Count only working days when you plan around your last day.

What it costs, and what you do not get back

The fee is US$10 per extension. If the applicant does not qualify, or refuses to accept the result, the fee already collected is not refunded. A document that is lost or expired and must be reissued is charged the same as a new issue.

A transfer of a still-valid visa to a new passport costs US$5. Circular 28/2026/TT-BTC took effect on 1 April 2026 and replaced Circular 25/2021/TT-BTC.

Extension or temporary residence card?

These are two separate procedures. The extension uses form NA5. The residence card uses NA8, paired with NA6 for an organisation sponsor or NA7 for an individual sponsor.

Form NA5

This guide covers extending your temporary stay. The national page lists the declaration form NA5 as a document, citing Circular 22/2023/TT-BCA of 30/6/2023. Circular 70/2026/TT-BCA took effect on 01/07/2026 and amends the form circulars, including the NA5 form. The national page’s legal-basis list still shows Circular 22/2023.

NA6, NA7 and NA8 are the forms for the separate temporary residence card procedure. Do not use them for an extension. See the temporary residence card guide.

Where to file in Nha Trang

The Khanh Hoa police immigration service list includes “Extending temporary stay for foreigners in Vietnam”. In a notice of 27/06/2025, the Immigration Management Division said it would receive applications in person at 47 Ly Tu Trong, Loc Tho, Nha Trang. Details are on the Nha Trang immigration office page.

If the dossier is filed online, the applicant may ask for the result to be delivered by post, paying the courier fee. Filing in person happens at the provincial police immigration agency, shown above.

Visa-exempt arrivals and e-visa holders

Extending a visa-free tourist stay is not covered here; see the Not confirmed box. The Khanh Hoa list has a separate procedure for “Extending temporary stay for persons issued a visa-exemption certificate”.

Two exemption lists exist. Citizens of 12 named countries, including the UK, Germany, France, Japan and South Korea, are visa-exempt for 45 days from entry, for any purpose. A separate list of 12 European countries is exempt for 45 days, for tourism only.

Under Law 23/2023/QH15, citizens of a country with unilateral visa exemption get 45 days of stay and may be considered for a visa or extension.

For an e-visa, the official portal says holders in Viet Nam may be considered for a new visa if invited or guaranteed by someone in Viet Nam. DL and EV visas are valid for a maximum of 90 days. See the e-visa guide and the visa run guide.

A holder of a visa-exemption certificate for overseas Vietnamese and relatives gets 6 months of temporary residence per entry. That stay can be extended, up to a further 6 months, if the holder has a Vietnamese sponsor and a valid reason.

If you run out of time

Overstaying is an administrative violation from the first day. Fines for an individual under Decree 282/2025/NĐ-CP start at 500,000-2,000,000 VND for under 16 days and rise to 5,000,000-10,000,000 VND for 16 to under 30 days.

Deportation can be applied as an additional penalty for the longer overstay bands; it is a discretionary decision. File early, because the 5 working days run only from a complete dossier. The full table is in the overstay fines guide.

Overstay Fine for an individual (VND)
Under 16 days 500,000 to 2,000,000
16 to under 30 days 5,000,000 to 10,000,000
30 to under 60 days 10,000,000 to 15,000,000
60 to under 90 days 15,000,000 to 20,000,000
90 to under 180 days 20,000,000 to 25,000,000
180 days to under 1 year 25,000,000 to 30,000,000
1 year or more 30,000,000 to 40,000,000

The fine set for a violation is the midpoint of its band. A sponsoring organisation found responsible is fined at double the individual rate. A fined person pays within 10 days of receiving the decision, unless it states a longer deadline. An unpaid fine can bar you from leaving Vietnam.

If you have already overstayed

A foreigner who has overstayed should go promptly to the Immigration Management Office of the provincial police where they are staying, to report, pay the fine and get guidance. Overstaying can lead to forced exit under Article 30. An unpaid fine can put you in the group that may be barred from leaving, for up to 3 years, extendable.
