Hon Chong Promontory: Hours, Legend and Getting There
Hon Chong Promontory is open 06:00 to 18:00, according to the Khanh Hoa tourism platform, and Google Maps shows the same hours every day of the week. The provincial resolution sets the entrance fee at VND 30,000 per person, with children exempt. Check the notice at the entrance.
Hon Chong Promontory is open 06:00 to 18:00, according to the Khanh Hoa Digital Travel Platform run by the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Google Maps shows the same hours, 6 AM to 6 PM, on every day of the week.
Another operator page, Xanh SM (21/02/2025), lists 7:00-19:00 daily. It conflicts with the official 06:00-18:00, so plan around the official window.
Local Vietnam, updated on 22/05/2026, lists 7:00am to 7:00pm. That is the same window as the Xanh SM page, so two operator pages disagree with the provincial platform.
Entrance fee
The Khanh Hoa People’s Council resolution sets the fee at VND 30,000 per person per visit, in force from 01/01/2023. Children are exempt, and the resolution sets no age.
Xanh SM (21/02/2025) listed 22,000 VND for adults and 11,000 VND for children, as a reference only. Treat that as an older operator figure and carry cash.
Local Vietnam gives a third figure. It says the rock-climbing section costs 30,000 VND per adult and 11,000 VND per child, and that entry to the beach area is free. Local Vietnam’s rock-climbing price differs from the official fee.
What to see at Hon Chong
The rocks
The larger group of rocks to the north is known as Hon Chong. The smaller and lower rock formation to the south is called Hon Vo, or the Wife Rock.
The Hon Chong - Hon Do landscape was shaped entirely by natural geological processes. Large and small rocks are stacked in several layers, stretching from the foot of La San Hill towards the East Sea.
The large balanced boulder at the top of the rock pile.
The legends
The largest boulder at Hon Chong is associated with two well-known legends: the story of the “Fisherman and His Wife” and the tale of the “Giant”.
Xanh SM says the best-known version has a giant who slipped his hand while resting, leaving a handprint pressed into the largest boulder. It also mentions a young scholar and a mermaid who were separated, and a young couple swept away by waves. Treat these as folk tales, not history.
Walking the rocks
Local Vietnam says a paved path leads out through the formations toward the sea, with the terrain rising as you move further in. Climbing higher gives views over Nha Trang Bay, with Hon Tre island offshore. It says this is not a swimming spot, because the rocks extend into the water and the shoreline is rough.
Local Vietnam says most visitors spend around an hour at the promontory.
Rocks and the shore
Xanh SM says the rocks formed through sea-wave erosion over time, at the foot of La San hill. Hon Vo is only a few metres from Hon Chong, in the same coastal rock group. Hon Chong lies beside Pham Van Dong avenue in the north of the city.
Hon Chong was long a shelter for fishermen in rough seas. In wartime the army used it to observe and defend the coast. Visitors can watch fishing boats return in the early morning.
Sunrise, sunset and the shore
Xanh SM says sunrise and sunset give Hon Chong a romantic scene that attracts visitors. It also says cafes beside the rocks let you look out over the sea. Fresh seafood and local specialities are served near the site.
Hon Chong beach
Local Vietnam says Hon Chong beach starts just north of the promontory and runs along Pham Van Dong Street. It says the water is shallow and sheltered, with minimal waves. Sun loungers with umbrella and towel rent for 50,000 VND, and motorbike parking costs 5,000 VND. Entry to the beach area is free, per the same page.
The observatory on the hill
The Nha Trang observatory sits at Hon Chong. VietnamPlus says it is one of two observatories of the Vietnam Space Center project.
Bao Phap Luat, on 17/02/2021, says it has a 0.5 m reflecting telescope built by an Italian precision-engineering company. It adds a planetarium of about 60 seats and a 200 sq m space exhibition room. The dome uses 6 high-resolution projectors for a 3D effect.
The same article says the observatory was finished in 2017. It said then that the observatory ran events only and could host at most 180 visitors at once. That is a 2021 report, so ask before you plan a visit around it.
Status
A 2011 Tuoi Tre article says the culture ministry ranked Hon Chong, part of the Hon Chong - Hon Do landmark, a national scenic relic in 1998. The same article reports that a 2011 plan for a stone park and Coffee Terrace drew objections from the relic-management centre, which called it a business on national scenic land.
Nha Trang Bay Assembly Hall
Khanh Hoa Province built the Nha Trang Bay Assembly Hall at the Hon Chong Scenic Site between December 2004 and March 2005. It was built to welcome a thematic conference of the Club of the Most Beautiful Bays of the World, which Nha Trang hosted in 2005.
Xanh SM says the hall is built in the style of an old Hue wooden house and keeps documents about Hon Chong and Nha Trang’s scenic sites. It adds that visitors can hear traditional instruments such as the stone lithophone, dan nhi and dan tranh.
Local Vietnam says the music sessions feature the dan tranh, dan nhi and dan da, with three or four songs per session. It says a session starts only once enough visitors have gathered, so there is no fixed schedule. Check at the gate whether performances are running.
Who it suits (and who should skip it)
Early risers: the site opens at 06:00.
Daytime visitors: it closes at 18:00, so plan to arrive before then.
Anyone on a fixed budget: confirm the entrance fee first, since no official source states one.
Photographers: Xanh SM suggests early morning or late afternoon, when it is cooler and the sun is not harsh.
Legend and culture fans: the giant handprint and fisherman stories are tied to the largest boulder.
Families wanting a calm swim: Hon Chong beach has shallow, sheltered water, per Local Vietnam.
Space fans: the observatory’s telescope and planetarium are at Hon Chong, but its 2021 schedule was events only.
Skip it if you want to swim off the rocks: the shoreline there is rough.
Skip it if you dislike crowds: Xanh SM lists 16:00-17:00 as the busiest hours.
Skip it in sandals if you are unsteady: Xanh SM says the rock surfaces are rough and slippery.

How to get to Hon Chong
The tourism platform gives the address as Hon Chong, Nha Trang. Xanh SM says it is about 4 km from the centre.
Xanh SM says to follow Tran Phu Street, pass the Pham Van Dong flyover and take the turn down to Hon Chong on the right. Motorbike riders can park and walk in.
Xanh SM lists its Nha Trang taxi opening fare for the first 2 km at 29,500 VND. It lists 18,000 VND per km from the next km up to km 12. The table is for reference only and may change.
Local Vietnam says a Grab or taxi ride from central Nha Trang takes 10-15 minutes and costs around 50,000-70,000 VND one way. It says Po Nagar Cham Towers is about 2 km south on the same road.

When to go and how long
Visit between 06:00 and 18:00, any day of the week. No source states how long a visit takes.
Xanh SM suggests early morning or late afternoon.
Local Vietnam says tour buses start arriving from around 9:30am and the site is noticeably crowded by midday. It calls late afternoon the best time, for light, cooler temperatures and atmosphere.
Its busiest-hours window is 16:00-17:00. Wear sports shoes or flats, and do not stand too close to the edge when climbing. Do not scratch or draw on the rocks, and follow the management board’s guidance.
Rain is the main weather risk. The Nha Trang station averages 17.6 rainy days in October and 18.0 in November, against 4.1 in March. VinWonders calls October to December the rainy season, with mostly light sudden rain.

Nearby and how to combine it
Local Vietnam says Hon Do, with a pagoda built in 1960, is a small rocky island about 300 m offshore, reached by free canoe from the shore. It is one blog source, so confirm the canoe at the shore.
Po Nagar Cham Towers is another sight on the same side of town. Visit Hon Chong first, between 06:00 and 18:00, then check the Po Nagar page for its hours before you head there.
